Evelyn Stevens, "Eve" (Swinton), is about to be nominated for a judgeship. But because of her upbringing, overdevotion to work, and need for control, her personal life is a mess. She's sexually involved with both a female psychotherapist (the always-intereresting Sillas) and a male architect. In addition, when her sister is picked up for shoplifting, she goes to stand by her, which involves a trip to a dusty desert town in the middle of nowhere and encounters with a variety of other women. This odd, cold, and ultimately frustrating movie was created by director and co-writer Susan Streitfeld on the inspiration of a nonfiction study of female sexual pathologies, _Female Perversions: The Temptations of Emma Bovary_, by psychotherapist Louise J. Kaplan.
