| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Play It Again, Sam |
This early Woody Allen film (1972 -- Herbert Ross directed) recreates his hit play about a mild mannered film critic named Allan Felix who gets dumped by his wife, has his ego crushed, and is at a loss about how to start another relationship. His best friends, a married couple named Linda and Dick Christie (Keaton and Roberts) try to fix him up with various blind dates, all of which end horribly. Confiding in Linda brings Allan ever closer to her, and he falls in love with her -- with the attendant guilt over betraying Dick. The spirit of Humphrey Bogart (Lacy) begins to appear to Allan and coach him through his romantic adventures. Keaton was 26 and making her first film appearance with Allen along with her supporting role in "The Godfather" that year. She is at her most sweet and self-effacing, and Allen's lovable loser-nebbish probably never has been better.
