| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Sidewalks of New York |
Writer-director-star Edward Burns (best known for "The Brothers McMullen" and a supporting role in "Saving Private Ryan") does the Woody-Allen-romance-in-NYC thang. Tommy (Burns) is a TV producer, newly divorced, who meets cute with schoolteacher Maria (Dawson) in a video store and they start dating casually. Her ex, a musician with a day job as a doorman (Krumholtz) pleads with her to get back together again, but also has his eye on a too-cute waitress (Brittany Murphy, looking and acting much like Meg Ryan's kid sister), who is having an affair with Griffin (Tucci), a womanizing dentist in his second marriage to sweet Annie (Graham). Annie is a real estate agent who meets Tommy when he's looking for a new place to live. Dennis Farina steals several scenes as a sleazy lounge-lizard actor associate of Tommy's. Despite a lovely cast, some good acting (Tucci is especially great, as always), and an okay script, this really does play like warmed-over Woody Allen, and the camera work (jarring hand-held shots and lots of subtle jump cuts -- in a fairly relaxed romantic comedy!) is especially puzzling.
