BANDITS is a film directed by Barry Levinson in 2001.
Two bank robbers, sharing the same dream of opening a night-club in Acapulco, fall in love with a girl who hang on to them after having left her dull husband. While more banks are being robbed by the sleepover bandits, Cate Blanchett decides not to make a choice between them; by taking this decision, she has also become, in a way, an outlaw.

Joe (Bruce Willis) is a hard nosed bank robber who escapes from prison with his hypochondriac pal, Terry (Thornton). Together they start successfully robbing several banks around southern California. Cate Blanchett is brilliant as the hostage who both criminals end up falling for. The result is an explosive blend of drama, action, and comedy with some excellent, nuanced characters.

Two convicts -- action man Joe Blake (Willis) and nerdy hypochondriac Terry Lee Collins (Thornton) -- break out of Oregon State Prison ... well, Joe breaks out and Terry Lee goes along for the ride. With the help of dim bulb Harvey (Troy Garity), a stunt man-wannabe who serves as their driver, they proceed to rob banks, quietly and calmly, by holding up the manager the night before, staying at his or her home, and going in to the office to remove the goods first thing in the morning before it opens for business. They become known as "The Sleepover Bandits." A bored and restless wealthy housewife named Kate Wheeler (Blanchett) runs away from home and gets thrown together with this unlikely pair, falling first for Joe and then for Terry Lee, which causes considerable stress in the partnership. Although the film is a bit long and slow in spots, and sports a few unfortunate plot holes, there are plenty of laughs and the love triangle turns out to be fairly interesting, especially with Thornton holding the comic center and Blanchett looking better (alternately dingy and direct) than she ever has before. Not terribly weighty or memorable, but quite satisfying anyway.
