Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Les Enfants Du Paradis
This is the highly romantic story of the ill-fated love between a mime named Baptiste and an actress and concubine named Claire Reine but known publicly as Garance. It takes place in Paris in the 1840s, and its lead characters are based on actual historic figures. Three other men covet Garance: a boisterous and egotistical actor named Frederick, a thief named Lacenaire, and the Count Eduard of Monterey. Baptiste and Garance first meet when he is falsely accused of stealing a man's watch; later, she has to leave the city under the protection of Count Eduard when she is inadvertantly involved in a crime committed by Lacenaire. When she returns to Paris years later, she is in a loveless marriage to the Count and Baptiste, now a famous mime, is in a similar marriage to the actress Nathalie. Garance makes plans to meet her sad and weak beloved in secret, which sets the stage for the tragic climax.
