This is the story of the mathematician John Forbes Nash, Jr. from his early years at Princeton to his paranoid schizophrenic breakdown and his remission and winning of the 1994 Nobel prize for contributions in the field of economic theory. The story focuses the days of code-breaking working under the wings of the U.S. Army and his deeply delusional period of internations and insulin-induced comas.

John Nash, a genius scientist, is seeing hallucinations of people (his roommate, roommate's niece, and a government agent). Nash had attended Princeton, where he had been ridiculed (mostly because of his lack of people-skills), until he came up with an original idea about economics. After that, when they found out he was seeing delusions, though, he had to get past those fears and show others that he was still a good person, even if he saw the delusions.

To explain this movie is to give it away. Watch it unfold before you and learn the depth of despair that the human mind can withstand. John Nash values his mind; the mind that both rebels against his reason and sets him free. In his promising youth, he longs for a new discovery distinguishing him from the intellectual pack at Princeton. In his seeking something new, he moves away from the crowd and creates his own world. He stumbles upon a profound idea/theory that does change the world. Because the apparent application of that theory is not exactly what he was looking for, he dismisses it as not important enough and continues to demand even more of his frail self and fragmenting mind.

It is this value for distinction, of longing to change the world that drives his mind to distraction, to discovery and to ultimately to peaceful coexistence with his demons and acceptance of his personal type of existence.

The undertoe of the story lies in that which is not stated. It is a careful (and hopefully honest) study of a man whose need to belong combines with an intellect which does not belong even to the greatness of his surroundings. The themes of mathematics, science and accomplishment pale against the shimmering background of this man's journey to self.
