Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Boondock Saints
The MacManus brothers, Connor and Murphy, are praying at church and displaying their very strong Catholic faith. Despite being exceptionally intelligent Irishmen, they work at a meat processing plant in South Boston. After work at a local Irish pub, the brothers get into a barroom brawl with the Russian mafia which is trying to take over the Irish-influenced part of the city. The next morning, not to be stopped, the injured mobsters find the two boys at their apartment and take Murphy down into the street to kill him. Although handcuffed to the toilet, Connor refuses to let it happen, pulls the receptacle out of the floor, and throws it and himself over the fire escape onto the Russians below. Murphy kills both mobsters and carries the unconscious Connor to a hospital, along with the mobsters' guns and money. After they had fled, the police survey the scene. The FBI specialist Agent Paul Smecker goes over the scene and aptly unravels the whole thing. The boys turn themselves in and tell Agent Smecker what happened. The three talk like old friends and respect each other for what they do. The case is dismissed, being called self defense.

The MacManus boys stay overnight at the jail to avoid the media. From a tip obtained from the Russians, the boys go to a mafia meeting and kill all who attend, trademarking their style of killing with the speaking of their family prayer and placing pennies upon the eyes of the men they have killed. Along with their friend Rocco, the boys begin taking out the Italian mob resident in Boston. Agent Smecker follows behind them and inspects every murder scene, but remains uncertain of the suspects. The Italian mob mafioso Papa Joe Yakavetta enlists the aid of a trained killer used by his forebears only in times of desperation due to his ruthlessness.

At a particularly gory battle scene, Smecker almost gives up in frustration until he discovers a clue that leads him directly to the MacManus brothers. Very inebriated, the non-Catholic FBI Agent stumbles into a confessional and tells the priest that these boys are only killing bad people and that he thinks they are doing what is right. He comes to his own conclusion and decides to help them. The boys go to Yakavetta's home to take him out and are ambushed. Having found out earlier on, Smecker goes to the house dressed in drag to get in and aid the brothers. While he is prowling the house, Smecker is knocked out by the mafia's hired assassin, Il Duce. The three men, Connor, Murphy, and Rocco, are taken by surprise and strapped to chairs and beaten. Yakavetta kills Rocco. As the brothers lament for their friend, Il Duce enters behind them and finishes their prayer for Rocco. Il Duce is actually the father of the MacManus brothers.

Papa Joe Yakavetta is called to court to answer for mafia related killings. Agent Smecker arranges for the three Irishmen to commandeer the courtroom and administer their warnings and vigilante justice. A speech follows wherein the brothers tell the courtroom that they will go on killing people who do wrong and not to be one of those people lest they be killed. Il Duce, Connor, and Murphy then speak their family prayer and kill the mafia kingpin before the court.
