| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about In the Mouth of Madness |
Written by Michael De Luca, IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS has been directed by John Carpenter in 1995.
Sam Neill is an insurance investigator asked to find Sutter Cane, a successful writer of horror stories, by Cane's editor Charlton Heston. Cane has disappeared for some months now and his readers are becoming hysterical as the release of his last novel is constantly delayed. Neill discovers that Cane must be hidden in Hobb's End, a little town lost in New Hampshire. Convinced that Cane's disappearance is a publicity setup, he drives to Hobb's End in the company of Julie Carmen, Heston's assistant.
After a strange night in the country, they finally arrive at Hobb's End, a town that perfectly matches Sugar Cane's descriptions written in his last unfinished book only Julie Carmen has had the opportunity to read for the moment. Children turning into monsters are haunting the little town, exactly as in Sugar Cane's latest opus. Neill is still persuaded that all of this has been organized by Charlton Heston in order to nail the audience while Julie Carmen becomes mad after having encountered Cane locked in a church. Sam Neill loses little by little his confidence as the reality fits closely Sugar Cane's frightening descriptions. Monsters are hidden in dark rooms and he realizes that he can not leave Hobb's End without Sugar Cane's permission.
Cane is pretending that his fantasy world will soon invade the Reality after the release of the movie IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS. Who's mad ?
A strange movie in Carpenter's filmography. Disturbing.
